Reflections on Matthew

Here are my thoughts on Matthew 1-4:
  • Jesus came in a time of great oppression 1:11
  • God's plan carries on despite our fears 1:20
  • This is what sets Jesus apart from other religious leaders 1:21
  • Do we know Jesus as "one who saves"?
  • Earth and Heaven come together in Jesus 1:23
  • Jesus was born into unexpected circumstances 2:6
  • People will sometimes use the name of God for evil purposes 2:8
  • Joseph's obedience helped protect the child 2:14
  • This is the basic message of the gospel! 3:2
  • Our religious heritage won't save us. Only Jesus will! 3:9
  • Jesus models for us obedience in baptism 3:15
  • God will allow for us to enter into seasons of distress as a test of faith 4:1
  • When are you most vulnerable to temptation?
  • Jesus calls us to a higher purpose 4:19
  • We are called to leave behind what is comfortable to follow Him 4:22

Those outside of the religous establishment were the ones that were able to see Jesus clearly for who he truly was. The wise men (who were kings themselves) worshipped him with joy while Herod and "all of Jerusalem" were "disturbed" at the news that the Messiah had been born(2:3). John the Baptist was a rebel and a renegade that denounced the Pharisees and Saducees but knew exactly who Jesus was. Do we sometimes get so caught up in being religous that we loose sight of the real Jesus and in doing so miss the "Good News" that the Kingdom of Heaven has come?

Jesus was born in an obscure stable in a small town, he lived in poverty in another small town and he died in disgrace and dishonor in a larger city. Yet He transformed the world and is still transforming lives today. Who is Jesus? Just the Savior of the world.
