This is a question I've shared with a handful of people. It's a question that I try to remember in moments of temptation. Here it is:
"Do I believe that this temporary pleasure will satisfy me more than Christ himself?"
Whatever the temporary pleasure might be: food, sex, companionship, greed, affirmation, etc, it will only satisfy me for a moment. When we get down to it, giving into temptation is really a moment of unbelief. It's a moment where we choose to find satisfaction in something other than Jesus. Faith is not simply intellectual assent, but also trust. In our weak moments, we must hold onto the trust we have in Jesus to satisfy our deepest longings.
